Each of the 38 Councillors is elected for a four year term. They decide how the District Council should carry out its many functions.

The current political balance of the council following the May 2023 elections is:

• Green Party: 15 members
• Independent: 7 members
• Labour Party: 4 members
• Progressive Independent Group: 6 members
• Conservative Party: 4 members
• Liberal Democrats: 2 members
