Nature, wellness and sustainability at Float in the Forest

Blending relaxation with sustainability for a healthier mind and planet

Background

For Shari and Will the dream of running a float centre became a reality when they established Float in the Forest in 2018.

They spent months searching for the perfect venue for Float in the Forest when they discovered the site adjacent to the Princess Colliery site. This historic location once had a pit bath for coal miners and seemed like a natural fit, offering a connection to the past.

Just as the baths had served as a place of rejuvenation and self-care for the miners, the float centre creates a sanctuary for personal well-being within the calming embrace of the Forest.

Shari and Will’s vision extends beyond wellness to a commitment to sustainability. They were fortunate enough to meet the founder of the first floating pod, who left them with the message to “protect the planet”. This message has helped to shape their approach to business; guiding every decision towards minimising environmental impact while promoting holistic health and well-being.

Project

Shari and Will established a mission to create a sustainable business that not only provides an idyllic floating experience for their customers but also prioritised minimising the environmental impact at every step of the process.

Results

Float in the Forest has embraced a variety of eco-friendly initiatives to minimise its environmental footprint while offering an exceptional floating experience.

The centre runs on 100% green energy from Ecotricity and produces its own renewable energy through solar PV panels on the roof. The building has extensive insulation (under floor and cavity wall, and multiple layers in the ceiling), double-glazed windows, LED lighting throughout and motion-sensor lighting in the float rooms, reducing overall energy consumption.

The centre also encourages the use of public transport, with a bus stop right outside, reducing reliance on cars. Sustainability is also reflected in the products and services offered.

Biodegradable earplugs made from plant-based materials are used by customers, and reusable earplugs are available for members.

Locally sourced supplies, such as ice cream from Chase Farm and eco-friendly, refillable toiletries all help to minimise waste and carbon emissions. The pods themselves are highly insulated and of course UK produced!

Looking ahead, Float in the Forest are exploring the integration of heat recovery systems to further reduce their energy consumption

“We believe that true well-being goes hand in hand with caring for the planet, which is why sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.”
