Buildings at risk
What is heritage at risk?
Heritage at risk is a designated heritage asset (listed building, Scheduled Ancient Monument, conservation areas Registered Parks and Gardens) which is a risk of being lost as a result of neglect, decay or inappropriate development.
There are two at risk registers published which are relevant to the Forest of Dean District, Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register and the Forest of Dean’s Buildings at Risk Register (provided at the end of this webpage).
Historic England Heritage at Risk Register
Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register is updated every year. Listed buildings that can be included on the Register include Grade I, Grade II*, and Grade II places of worship in England. The public can make nominations to this register.
In the Forest of Dean District, there are 15 entries on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.
Historic England have local teams who specialise in heritage at risk. They can help identify opportunities where Historic England can get involved to make a difference. Historic England also has some grant funding available for Heritage at Risk, however, this is subject to application.
Forest of Dean Buildings at Risk Register
The Forest of Dean Buildings at Risk Register currently has 27 entries (some of these are also on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register). The most recent survey of the Forest of Dean’s buildings at risk was undertaken between 2021-2022 and a copy of the report can be found at the bottom of this web page.
The Forest of Dean’s Buildings at Risk Register evaluates the physical condition of the building at the time of the survey, making recommendations/actions to be carried out to preserve the building for the future. The report highlights which of the buildings must remain on the risk register (24 buildings) and which have been successfully preserved to a sufficient level, so they are no longer at risk and can be removed from the list (3 buildings).
