Article 4 Directions

An Article 4 direction removes or restricts permitted development rights within defined locations. It can apply to a particular area or site anywhere within the District.

Where an Article 4 Direction applies, you must apply for planning permission for any works or alterations that the Direction restricts.

There are currently two Article 4 Directions in the District:

An Article 4 Direction has been applied within the Newnham Conservation Area, to manage alterations to buildings which, although not listed, are considered to contribute to the special architectural and historic interest of the Conservation Area. The Direction restricts the following works:

  • Installation of new windows and external doors
  • Rendering the front elevation
  • Painting or re-painting a property
  • Replacement of gutters

This was approved by the Executive Committee on the 16 November 2006.

An Article 4 Direction has been applied to land off Redhouse Lane, Murrells Road and Smithy Close in English Bicknor which protects its character and designated important open areas. The Direction restricts the following works:

  • The erection or construction of a gate, fence, wall or other means of enclosure

This was agreed by the Development Control Committee on the 14 June 2011.
